Acne Breakouts - What Are the Causes

Acne breakouts can be a result of several factors. Some of these factors include stress, hormonal imbalances, smoking, heredity and cosmetics. Stress is considered as the leading cause of acne in adults. When you are stressed, the brain triggers the central nervous system to send signals to the rest of the body as part of the fight or flight response. The response may include hormonal release from your adrenal glands. It may also trigger the secretion of fats from the sebaceous glands that lye beneath your skin. The fats normally clog the pores leading to the problem.

Hormonal imbalances lead to acne breakouts in women. The imbalances that take place when a woman is menstruating and during pregnancy can make one develop the disease. Cigarette smoking introduces certain toxins into your body. These chemicals will not only limit your blood circulation but also inhibit your skin's ability to heal and regenerate. The toxins can clog the pores on your skin leading to the condition.

If you have a close adult relative for example a parent with the disease, you are more likely to suffer from the same. Adult acne can also be as a result of use of certain cosmetics that have the potential to clog skin pores.

Acne breakout among teenagers is prevalent because of the changing hormonal activity at this period. The hormones released at the onset of puberty are responsible for this condition. These hormones normally stimulate the skin's sebaceous glands to produce excess oil leading to an oily skin. An oily skin is susceptible to pore blockages and breakouts.
